A beach outside Leningrad in the winter of 1941:
Two women, mother and daughter, make their way back to town with a handful of horse meat. The meat could save them both from starvation - had the daughter not already secretly devoured it. During a long walk, the lies of both women, which are essential for survival, are put to a severe test.
